A large proportion of clients coming into counselling and psychotherapy will never have experienced this kind of situation before and may be nervous or anxious and not entirely know what to expect. Sharing very personal, embarrassing or sometimes painful information with a stranger can sometimes be difficult.
This initial meeting will give me the opportunity to assess and plan how I can best support you. It also gives you the opportunity to meet me and explore how counselling/psychotherapy could help you before deciding to continue and gives us the chance to address any questions or concerns that you may have regarding the counselling and psychotherapy process to help put your mind at ease.
During this first consultation a client questionnaire will be completed where information such as your name, address and doctors details can be gathered. Additional, more in-depth information will also be asked, such as what kind of issues you would like to address and a history of how these issues are presenting themselves in your life. Due to the amount of information gathering and sharing in this session, up to 1 ½ hours are allowed for the initial assessment appointment. Therapy sessions after this initial meeting last a full hour though length, frequency and cost of any future work will all be negotiated with you during this first meeting.
The initial consultation is also the perfect time to fully discuss issues of confidentiality. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance in order to create a safe and therapeutic environment for you to get the most from our sessions and it is important that you know how your information will and will not be shared. As a Psychotherapist, I am bound by my code of ethics to keep your information totally confidential, with very few exceptions. For further information please refer to ‘Terms and Conditions’.
During this initial meeting, we will also have the opportunity to discuss and negotiate the length of therapy that you may need and the costs involved.
The Length and time of therapy can vary depending upon each individual client’s needs. Therapy can be just a few sessions, sometimes even one session may be enough or sessions may continue over several weeks or months. This will depend on your individual situation and will be discussed with you before and during your course of therapy.
Sessions last for one hour but can be adapted to your needs. Many people may attend once a week, but the frequency can vary according to your needs.
Reviews of our work together are undertaken regularly throughout the course of therapy to ensure that your goals are achieved in the shortest time possible.
